Something that really......

Pisses me off - insurance companies not paying for water damage. So here is my gripe. In watching the news this morning I saw a lady all bent out of shape in California whose home is destroyed due to the rain/mudslides and her home owner's insurance wont cover the damage.

I also went through this when Austin got his by the remnant of a tropical storm, I had, what I thought was a hydraulic effect from standing water due to so much rain. It appeared to whick up through my concrete. When I spoke to my insurance they said if it was the case they would not pay for repairs due to lack of flood insurance. I said why would I need flood insurance I dont live in a flood plain or near anywhere that floods!!!

So with that backstory I am watching this lady, who from the back ground of her home appeared to have the same thing going on, nice residential neighborhood, no flood plain, not anywhere that would "typically" flood except when a out of the ordinary uncommon torrential downpour happens. So now this family can't afford to pay for the repairs, has a home that they cant live in, so what do they do?

My question in a case like this is what happens? I have a sneaky suspiscion the insurance company isnt hurting for profits. I could understand not paying if someone knew and lived somewhere that flooded but decided not to purchase the insurance. Why do they specifically exclude the water damage piece?

Cheers
K

We had floods here in R.I in March 2010. No flood insurance, no payout. I had water in my basement just from the water table rising and had no water in this basement since the house was built in 1939. I don't think flood insurance protects against a rising water table thats floods your basement.

Luckily we only had about four inches of water which was pumped out the next day. When it started coming in we moved things upstairs and to higher ground downstairs. The next day we just started throwing stuff out, reorganizing and used fans and dehumidifiers to dry it out. Some neighbors were still pumping out for 10 more days. Others had sewerage in there basement. We were lucky.
