Chevy Volt Batteries - after the fact

I found this to be real interesting.

I'm not saying anything one way or the other -- but it's some good brain-food.

Quote:
TROY, Mich. – General Motors and ABB Group will work together to develop pilot projects for re-using the batteries from the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle, examining whether the batteries may be a source for renewable energy that could improve the effectiveness of wind and solar power generation.

The two companies are collaborating to determine how the Volt’s 16-kWh lithium-ion batteries can be used to provide stationary electric grid storage systems once the batteries have fulfilled their usefulness in customers’ vehicles.

Very nice! Good to see they're trying to avoid landfilling them like other manufacturers.

Better than just trashing them.

Cool.

I thought the interest in those batteries for utilities was about using new Volt-like batteries, not buying back used ones. It will be interesting to see what comes from this.

Even at the 8-year limit of the warranty, the batteries are supposed to be able to retain something like 90% of their charge. Which is in the neighborhood of 14Kwh. Not something worth throwing away.

That 90% seems high... but maybe the battery packs are that good.

It'd be sweet if it were true.

It might be 80%...all I remember was it was the difference of a few miles range.

Off topic I know, but did they ever settle the MPG ordeal with the EPA?

If they had, I think they would announce it in neon lights on the side of a Goodyear blimp. I haven't seen anything yet.
