What purpose could that possibly serve, that thing better handle like crazy to justify three decades of work....

The extra 2 wheels add to the uniqueivity quotient. Unless they are extra drive wheels, I don't see what they would do, other than increase nose weight and complexity.

I think it has to do with road grip.

Regardless of what they do, they probably give the C6W a very unique feel when driving.
