IS HITTING REV LIMITER HARMFUL?
I have been out practicing my launches and keeping track of my 60' times and 0-60 times. I hit the rev limiter every time I try to wring every bit of rpm out of my car. I am focused on the HUD tach and it never gets to 6500 before the motor falls away. My first question is, is this harmful to the motor when the rev limiter engages and cuts the power? I have also focused on the MPH and the rev limiter kicks in at 59 mph and strangely (to me) it appears that the car does not achieve 60 mph until l lift off the gas. I thought this car was capable of 63 mph in first gear? Is my technique the problem? Any suggestions on this issue?

the limiter is there to prevent a catastrophic problem but hitting the limiter like that isn't harmful. A mechanical over rev is another problem entirely. I personally have hit the limiter at least 10 times...maybe 20 at VIR. The little hiccup you feel is a fuel cutoff/spark limiter.

I will say that hitting the rev limiter in 1st gear doesn't sound like a good way to drive/shift, you need to shift earlier in 1st especially with this car and the TQ in 2nd. When I hit it on canyons it's always in 2nd. Or 3rd/4th on the track. |

It is when you hear a big bang then you know it is harmful.

I've hit the rev limiter once on my 2020 2SS, it was pretty eye opening... I was in manual mode and was coming down an on ramp and had it to the floor... I was a tad late paddle shifting (using the HUD tach and being "drunk" from the sound of the NPP in "Track Mode" singing a magical tune) and holy crap, it was like someone pulled the rug out on me... My wife gave me the "If you break this damn car doing this crap you aren't getting another one" look... From now on, if I'm really going to romp on it, I'm just gonna stick it in "D" and let the computers do a much better job than I can...

The hud output seems to be delayed slightly (both rpms and speed) which is noticeable on 1st gear upshifts and when trying to brake hard to a specific mph. I was ending up about 10mph lower than desired on entry to one corner at a track day due to the HUD lag until I stopped waiting for my desired speed to appear on the HUD before taking my foot off of the brake pedal.
For upshifts you can probably find a lower mph # displayed on the HUD to use as your shift point in order to get the 1-2 shift to happen consistently right around 6500rpm on the physical tach needle without hitting the rev limiter assuming you are always full throttle and not losing traction. |

My hits the rev limiter at the top of 1st and sometimes 2nd at WOT. It's annoying and probably could be tuned out of the ECU but it's harmless

The rev limiter is generally either cutting fuel or cutting spark. Cutting fuel can create a temporary lean spike which is deadly on some highly boosted turbocharge cars, while cutting spark will rain pain on the catalytic converter. Not sure which one the Camaro ZL1 uses. Maybe it cuts both. Quote:
I have driven some other cars(mostly family cars) that will upshift for you if you hit the redline in manual mode.

My comments are based on driving in Auto both in Sport or Track mode

Have done it a couple times at the drag strip when I forget to put it back in auto after the burnout.
Falls right on its face, noses over, and no harm.
