R&T 'vette GS vs GT500

OK, Here are the numbers that R&T say they got in the test:

Make/
Model 2010 Chevrolet Corvette ..........................................2011 Ford Shelby GT500

List price $54,770 .................................................. .................$48,645
Price as tested $68,365 .................................................. .........$55,537
Curb weight est 3360 lb .................................................. .........3820 lb
Engine, transmission 6.2-liter V-8, 6-sp manual ........................5.4-liter supercharged V-8, 6-sp manual
Horsepower, bhp @ rpm 436 @ 5900 ....................................550 @ 6200
Torque, lb-ft @ rpm 428 @ 4600 ............................................510 @ 4250
0-60 mph 4.1 sec .................................................. ..................4.4 sec
0-100 mph 9.2 sec .................................................. .................9.2 sec
0-1320 ft (1/4 mile) 12.4 sec @ 116.5 mph .............................12.6 sec @ 118.9 mph
Top speed 190 mph* .................................................. .............155 mph*
Braking, 60-0 mph 112 ft................................................ .........117 ft
Braking, 80-0 mph 197 ft .................................................. .......197 ft
Lateral accel (200-ft skidpad)0.96g..................................... ......1.00g
Speed thru 700-ft slalom 70.7 mph ...........................................69.6 mph
Our mileage, EPA city/highway est 17.0, 16/26 mpg .................est 16.0, 15/23 mpg

The 'vette wins or ties in every category except lateral acceleration. Guess who they picked as the winner? The GT500 of course! What a load of crap!

When I first saw your post and the number`s I thought you had made a mistake and I had to read it for myself and SOB if they didn`t give the GT500 the win!

The GT500 may very well out handle the Vette in term`s of skid pad numbers, but put the two of them on a 40-50 lap road course and that 3820 lb (and I thought the Camaro was heavy!) over weight pig GT500 will have chewed up it`s tire`s long before the Vette`s tires wear out.

I'd have to agree with them .. for 10K less , look at what it did against the vette .. very impressive for a car that weighs almost 500lbs more ..

You do know that the 3820 is just under what a camaro SS weighs right?

Ford really has squeezed more performance out of the GT500 than most thought possible. If you're looking for a fast, all-round solid performer and have $50k to spend this might be the car for you. Can't wait to see how the Z-28 measures up!

I would really like to see a head-to-head with BMW. The 2011 GT vs the 2011 M3. I think bimmer fans might be in for a surprise with the $30k Ford.

The mustang went toe to toe with the Big Money Waste and cost HALF as much but of course you know who got the win right? BMW.
I gave up a long time ago on what the car mags say in a comparison.

Ya I do, why do you think I said "and I thought the Camaro was heavy!" in my post? But we`re not comparing Camaro Vs GT500 are we. It`s a Vette Vs GT500.

The driver praised the "balance" of the Mustang and said he believed it would beat a Camaro around the track. Do we have track times comparing the Camaro to the the 2011 Mustang GT? All I can find is 1/4 mile times.

i think something is getting lost in translation because im as confused as the other poster. when you say " and i thought the camaro was heavy" it sounds to me like your saying the camaro is comparatively light to the GT500.

either way i raise the flag on this one. the corvette may be slower around the track, and slightly quicker in a straight line up to the 1/4 but it deserves the win for the same reason Miatas, Boxters, RX8's, and BMW's win comparisons; it is the all around better car. i swear magazines just go for what's new....

It all comes down to impressions. Obviuosly they were impressed with the GT500's performance enough that it overcame the Vette's slight advantages in performance. The GT500 is not in the same category as the Vette but performs just about the same. Consider that and the price difference:

Price as tested $68,365 .................................................. .........$55,537

$ for $ the GT500 is the better car.

Drop the ~$13K difference into the GT500 and it will spank the Vette all day long in any scenario.

You'd think a nearly $30K price difference would outweigh the "feel" of a BMW, considering that is what gave BMW the win.

No, no, I`m not saying that the Camaro is lighter than the GT500 at all. My point was that they are the same, heavy.

Actually, the GT500 has about 160lbs of Supercharger, intercoolers, heavy duty sways, heavy duty output shafts, Cobra badges, etc... .that the Camaro SS does not have.... so not a direct comparison.
