GM's Ecotec, Applied to Fisker

Fisker is building an electric car, but it needed a motor to charge the batteries. After 50 miles of running on those batteries, they will charge and it will run on a 2.0L GM Ecotec motor. This is proof that GM's 4-bangers are among the best.

Discuss.

I've worked with the Ecotec engine since 2002 in my own cars and as an avid car tuner...it's a great engine!

Congrats to GM!

Some of our non-GM members should be aware that the 2.0L Ecotec is current turbocharged powerhouse that makes the Cobalt SS and HHR SS so fast.

After reading that, I have come to think of the Karma as the Volts 'Brother from another Mother'. One question though, why does it need a 260 hp engine to recharge the batteries?

That's what Leftlane pointed out. I don't know either, but it might be that the characteristics of that motor can be best tuned for fuel efficiency. It features quality forced induction, it has small displacement, and it may have other qualities, like compression ratio or build quality, that make it a prime candidate for placement into another machine.

when the HHR first came out, fast was not a word i would've put in the same sentence, but the SS is pretty impressive

Well the 2.2L is the one to stay away from, the 2.4L will hold it's own pretty well in performance and mileage... Like I said the 2.2L is a Dog...

I think they also make a 2.0L non turbo version. but not available in the USA.

They do. There is also a long line of other ECOTEC engines that GM produces that aren't sold statside. If I'm not mistaken there is also a 1.8L ECOTEC that is sold in the Opel Astra and others... (oh which is stateside now as a Saturn) .... Nevermind...

Also there will be a 1.4L Turbo ECOTEC that will be offered as a base engine for the Chevrolet Cruze when it comes to the U.S market in 2010, and if I'm not mistaken in other markets where the Cruze is currently being sold, such as in Korea, Russia, and other markets where it's known as the Lacetti it'll be offered in a 1.6L normally aspirated variant....

The ECOTEC is a solid engine, and I've owned a couple now in my life where I can confidently say that.... Now for the rest of the car's other components I can't say the same sometimes...
