Anyone ever remove flowtie chrome surround?

I decided to paint mine in an effort to ditch all the chrome so I searched how to remove it. Only found SS how to, so followed that to access the back clips thru the radiator cover and was easy.... Only downside is ours apparently doesn't clip in like theirs, looks like they're permanently fused together. I attempted to use my cheap soldering iron to melt a couple fused points while prying gently from the front, but no luck.

Really wanted to paint it, but wrapping may be only option, figured I'd ask in case anyone else had luck removing?

Definitely considered dipping mine, but I'm wanting something similar to NFG so it'll match my emblems.

I did consider taping things off to spray on the car, but it may be a pain.... especially inside the flowtie.

I removed the rear bowtie, was going to paint it as well even though at the moment don't plan to reinstall. If anyone is wondering about separating the chrome surround on it, it also appears to be fused together.

I'm so use to seeing the bowtie on the rear, almost looks naked without it. I dig the clean look though, definitely won't be going back now that I've seen it without.

Also making some new inlays for the 1, I dislike red that much, lol. This was first test fit.

I haven’t dechromed the front emblem yet, but here’s what I did with the rear:

That came out great, I like the idea vs leaving the black insert. If I do decide that install back on the car down the road, I may have to copy ya.

Glad to hear confirms what I assumed, they're melted together. Looks like you didn't have to drill apart, were you able to get them apart another way?

Didn't cross my mind to try and drill the fused parts of the front. Melting didn't work but that may. Not sure if there's enough room to use a drill with a 90deg adapter back there but possibly. I'll attempt it again soon when I can focus on just that and not messing around with the other emblems.

I'll report back on this thread with how it goes.

A long time ago i discovered Tarnex will remove the chrome plate from plastic model car parts.
It might work on these emblems.

Yes, I did have to drill out the melted parts. It was pretty easy and didn’t damage anything. Although in my case, I didn’t care about damage since I was removing the entire insert no matter what.

If an upper grille didn’t cost so much, I’d just buy another one to experiment on. I’m hesitant to try masking off the front and painting the flowtie in place.

Yep, that's what makes me hesitate to try and remove. Definitely don't want to have to replace the whole upper grill.

I'm going to do something, just not sure what yet. If I can't wrap it, I may try the least invasive and make an overlay for the front of it, at least it'd hide a chunk of it.
