V-Day around the corner... Doing something outside my realm (metal art)

I wanted to do something different, and have never done anything quite like this before, but I had some free time yesterday and wanted to give it a shot...

I watched a couple youtube videos to get the gist of the idea, and went to work to make this bad boy yesterday...

I posted the pictures on Facebook last night and the response I got from my friends was almost overwhelming. I ended up selling this one to a nice older friend of mine because he really wanted it. I still have to put a stem on it for him.

The metal I used wasn't the greatest, it was just some scrap galvanized sheet metal I had laying around. I'm going to try to make 2 more today and play with some torch coloring on one, and making another one that will incorporate some rust for that "rat-rod" look.

Anyway, just wanted to share. I thought it was pretty cool.

That is awesome! Any reason you couldn't powder coat it afterwards? A forever red rose. I'd buy one!

It would work, but I think the petals might be a little tight to let the powder all the way in? Might look like a fade or something? Hard to say? Maybe spray paint would work better?

I made two more tonight. One galvanized one side, and rust the other side. Looking back now, I think I should have flip flopped the rust and galv sides every other row, it would have looked killer, but over all I really like the look of this one...

The other one I etched for a long time, then baked it with the torch... It's a little dark, but the "vein lines" really pop...

Then I decided I was starting to have too many of these rolling around so I made myself a ghetto wood stand to put them in...

Anyway, thanks for reading Sorry for the large pics, I figured the forum would resize them when I uploaded them, but I guess not.

Cool!

Is it a continuous ribbon of steel rolled up or is each row separate?

Copper.... Just sayin

Electroplated copper petals?

Camera couldn't really catch the shininess. 1st and 2nd pic show how the pieces start out, and pieces bent up ready to reassemble. One continuous roll would be interesting though!

Thanks Ruby and MrTwisty for the kind words.

Haha... Yeah, we're set up pretty well... All that's left on my wish list is a CNC lathe, and a decent sized CNC press brake and I'll be in heaven. A 4th axis on the mill would be nice to have too though...

The "electroplating" stuff, is just a cheap $40 plug-n-plate from Caswell. It's neat for artsy BS, but it's nothing extravagant.

I'm going to order some copper sheet today, and some titanium for the next 4 flowers...

Copper will be easy to manipulate petals, titanium may be tricky, but it sounds too good not to try.

How about copper brazing rod for the stems, they'll even turn green when oxidized.

You might even try leaves and stuff and put a dozen roses in a vase.

Nice Certainly something different for V-day. Would be awesome if you could give the rust a red tinge.
