i don't understand... they (Ford) know the Taurus has a such a terrible history.. why would you use that name to describe a potentially great car?

Because they learned that changing the nameplates on cars does nothing more than confuse and drive potential buyers away.

Remember how well the Five Hundred sold?

Fusion, MKZ, Milan, Sable, Taurus, Zephyr, 500, 6, or whatever variant of Ford vehicle could have been used... not to make a big debate about what looks like a great vehicle, i just don't see why you would take a name that some people relate to white trash and use it to try to sell new vehicles in this economy...

i think most people are in agreement that the Taurus was junk, but the Mustang engine in the SHO made it a junk body with a good engine.. lol much like the Lincoln Mark VIII

That was actually a Yamaha engine not a Mustang.

You totally missed the point.

Taurus has been around forever, and no matter what its reputation may be, people still know what a Taurus is which translates into people being able to seek out the vehicle when shopping. Changing the name to Five Hundred just confuses people into thinking it's not the car they're looking for. One of my teachers in high school went to trade in his 13 year old Ford Taurus and ended up getting a Fusion instead because there wasn't a Taurus available at the time and he had no idea what a Five Hundred was. Mullaly himself said that changing nameplates was one of the biggest mistakes Ford ever made.

Actually, for years, the Taurus was the premier midsize sedan in America, and the Japanese had to work to beat it. Eventually it came down to a three way race between the Camry, Accord, and Taurus. For years it was nothing but a success story. Then unfortunately Ford, like the other Detroit manufacturers, let it slip and age while the Japanese pressed forward. That said, even the later ones were pretty good. We have an 04 Taurus wagon, and it is a pretty good car. Besides an interior door panel breaking apart a bit (just need to get some new fasteners) and a rough idle, it is serving us well, and that's after an early life as a rental car. Hard to argue with mpgs in the mid 20s, wide open cargo room, seating technically for 8, V6 power, and good visibility. They're pretty easy to work on too.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the new taurus.

But what cracks me up most are the "What make is this car?" comments. Can none of them see the fracken' blue oval on the front of it?

For the period between the late 1980's and mid 1990's, the Taurus was right with the Camry and Accord as far as best selling family sedans. It actually outsold them a few of those years.

When done properly, the Taurus was nothing to sneeze at. Ford lost their way with the car in 1996 when they tried to put the oval into every corner of the car, turning the design into a cartoon. But the original 1985-1995 Taurus was a good car. The original 1988-1993 SHO Taurus was fantastic.

So Ford wants a crappy ride quality? Gonna be bone jarring with those rims.
