Solar Ecplise on 10-23-2014 in Southern California - Some images I took
As most of you many know on 10-23-2014 here in Southern California we had the opportunity to view a partial solar eclipse between 2:00pm and 4:40pm
My daughter Emma and I set up our telescope and tracked the sun during this time and recorded some nice images of the event, I have assembled them into a time-lapse video and uploaded it to you tube, also below are some still shots used to make that video Our telescope is a Celestron CPC-800 Deluxe EdgeHD (if you care to google it), attached to it is a White light solar filter and a 2 inch micro focuser with an F6.3 focal reducer/corrector so that we can attach our Canon DSLR camera for Astro-imaging.. We bought this scope last March, while we have used it for viewing quite a bit, this is the first attempt at using it for imaging. Hope everyone enjoys! FYI - In the video the images have been rotated and flipped to show the actual orientation of the sun, the images have not.. for those not aware an SCT telescope views the object upside down and in reverse due to the dual mirror setup, all images have to be rotated and flipped to be in correct orientation. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice pics. Those sun spots are huge. Glad you have something fun to do with your daughter. As mine gets older we do less and less. She is still into the Camaro though so at least we have that.

Outstanding pics, Mr. i! Very nice!
I was able to view the eclipse (using some strong filters... the sunspots intrigued me more so than did the moon passing in front... I don't think I have ever seen sunspots before... other than on my great aunt Gertrude's neck. |

Those spots just forming on Tuesday when I was testing my equipment to make sure it worked for Thursday: here are a couple of pictures prior to Thursday, and you can see the spot wasn't as large: ![]() ![]() Here is Thursday: ![]() Here are some images from Friday after the flare (grabbed these from Solarham.com)

This might be a stupid question...
What planet or moon caused the eclispe?

our moon.. a Solar Eclipse is when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun on the same (or close to the same) plane as your location.. This one was a 44% partial viewable from most of the Western U.S., as such the Moon was not quite on the same plane as our location, it was offset by a few degrees, causing only a partial coverage of the Sun.. ![]() A Lunar Eclipse is when the Earth passes between the Sun and moon on the same (or close to) plane as your location: ![]() We have been fortunate enough to have both this year in the SoCal area, an event that won't occur again for about 70 more years. understand that the orbit of the moon is not circular, it's elliptical and it wobbles a bit, so it constantly varies as to its location and distance in relation to Earth..

Good stuff, Mr. I.....
This stuff is pretty fascinating....These eclipses wouldn't be near as spectacular if it wasn't for the improbable coincidences of the diameters and distances apart of the earth, moon and sun.... |

I am looking forward to the total eclipse on August of 2017... I'll need to travel about 1000 miles to get to the "path of totality," but that'll make a good excuse for a road trip.

yep we are about the same 980 miles from Fogarty Creek State Park in Oregon, and we are already planning the trip, getting together with our local astronomy club, and I have a co-worker who is also into astronomy whose parents live in Lincoln Beach and have offered to put us up for a few days.. Path of Totality @ Fogarty Creek is supposed to be 1 minute 15 seconds, the longest for this eclipse.. Hopefully it works out, as the next total eclipse for this part of the U.S.A. isn't until around 2093..
