Windows Networking Gurus Please Help!

Hey guys, I'm attempting to share my internet connection through my laptop to my PS3. I have everything pretty much setup. I inputted the necessary IP addresses as well as allowed Internet Connection Sharing. My problem is that it has my Home Networking Connection as the wireless connection instead of the LAN connection I want it to share to. And I can't change it. I know there's supposed to be a drop down menu there but I can't get it, does anyone know what might be wrong and why the drop down menu doesn't show? This is on Windows 7 btw.

How are you connecting your laptop to the Internet? Wired or Wireless? Why can't you just connect your PS3 to the same connection that your laptop is using instead of trying to share your network connection from your laptop? Are you just sharing your connection to share files between your laptop and PS3 or for both file sharing and Internet access?

I'm just a little confused on what you're trying to do.

What he said, connect them both to the same network, enable sharing through the network on your laptop.

Your PS3 will recognize it and you will be able to find the files that the PS3 is able to read.

I'm doing this at my university. They only allow us to connect a gaming system with a wired connection. Only thing is they don't allow direct hook ups to the network. You have to run a wired connection to the laptop. Have the laptop configured to access the network and then run a wired connection from the laptop to the gaming system. In this case, I got what I needed working but now my problem is that the network won't authenticate. So the ps3 can't connect. I have a USB to gigabit Ethernet adapter with an Ethernet cable running to the ps3 any ideas?

Ok here is a way around this. Are they issuing your computer a IP address or are you having to have it hardcoded into your laptop?

If you did not have to type in an IP address for your computer then they are issuing DHCP. You can then go buy your self a wireless Netgear router, one of the better ones in the 120.00 up range. You then hook it to the wire coming into your room in the yellow Ethernet Port on the back. You can then hardware you laptop to it.

See if you can get out to the internet. If you can then go into the router and setup a wireless network with a SSID you want or the ones provided by Netgear. NOW here is the key, tell the network not to broadcast the SSID. This will make it that you can type in the SSID and Password to connect the wireless device to, the best thing is you now have WI-FI but since you are not broadcasting the SSID no one will know you have one.

I would buy it at Walmart since if it does not work out you can take it back.

I could even get it to work if they give you a hardcoded IP just a little more work.

If you try this and need help feel free to PM me and would could setup a time to get on the phone and walk thru it.

That sadly won't work. They don't allow any routers or switches at all. The way I described it is the only way they're letting us do it. Basically it's a wire from the Ethernet connection in the room to the laptop and then another cable from the laptop to the system. And yes, they give us an IP address to configure into the laptop and into the system.

So if i understood this correct you need to have your laptop connected through a hardwire connection and then your gaming console needs to be connected to the laptop to create a bridge type of network?

Edit: And if you have to use a wired connection to your laptop does that mean you are not allowed to create any form of a wireless network? It might be a long shot but I was thinking of taking the wired connection going into your laptop and then making your laptop (assuming your running windows since that is what you asked for in the title) and creating a hot-spot type of network called a Ad hoc. And the reason I say its a long shot is because Ad hoc is designed for computer to computer and not mobile devices but sometimes can work

But the school doesn't provide a wireless network for you right? If they do its very simple to create a bridge from the wireless NIC to the wired NIC. If you only have the one cable and need to use the laptop as a middle man and are not allowed a switch or router then it might not be possible because any form of splitter will create a bunch of packet loss

No, I have 2 cables. The one from the port in the room to the laptop and then a USB to Ethernet adapter and then a cable from the adapter to the game system.

We do get a wireless network but I don't know if setting it up like that would work. Not to mention that recently the wireless network has been extremely spotty.

What OS are you running?

Does The USB adapter show up in your network and sharing center when connected? I have never used on so I'm not exactly sure how it looks inside the OS.

You can't bring in your own router or switch and run them both off the switch?

Make your own password protected network and sign them both in.

Run from the network cable into the room to the router, set up the router like normal with a password and then connect laptop and ps3 to the router. Enable sharing on the laptop and connect to the laptop through the ps3.
