Army guy heading to Shaw AFB, SC.

Anyone familiar with the area? Should be stationed there by August.

How did you get that lucky? I should be the one talking. I was stationed at Sheppard AFB while in the Army.

I'm AD Air Force and was stationed at Charleston AFB (now JB Charleston) '04-'08. In general, South Carolina and the Charleston area was nice. I don't know much about the Army side of Shaw and the local area (Sumter, SC). I drove through once and it was kinda in the middle of nowhere. Columbia, SC isn't too far away though. SC weather is typically humid and the summer afternoon storms can get crazy sometimes.
Car scene is pretty big. You are close to NASCAR country (Darlington and North Carolina) so expect more V8 RWD cars/trucks in comparison to 4 cylinder imports. A popular SC GM forum is www.fastgm.com but there are less posts on it today.

I cant speak about the base, never been there, but I really liked the Charleston area alot. Myrtle Beach is a tourist trap but still not a bad way to spend a weekend. Lots of good hunting and fishing around Santee, Lake Marion and Moultrie. I did alot of deer hunting around Francis Marion forest when I was stationed in Charleston in the 90s (I know, old guy).
For the car scene I'd check out a local SCCA event like a Solo2. Find a few of those guys that have similar interests and see where it goes from there. They likely know all the car stuff in the area. Carolina Motorsports Park is about 30 - 45 minutes away. It looks like Roebling Road is about 2.5 - 3 hours away so that could be an option too.

In general there should be an active car scene in the area with plenty to do. As for the Air Force base well, its the Air Force, it'll be a bit of a culture shock to you but probably in a good way

LOL Thanks for the info. I'm kinda looking forward to the AFB. I heard they are roughly 1/2 done rebuilding the housing so might be a crap shoot with housing....old or new. Fingers crossed.
