My second car is a 2006 eclipse with $135K on her. Have not had any problems with the car but recently the SES light came on (code P0442). I took it to Midas across the street and the guy said I need a new gas tank, and it was going to cost $1100.
I already found the part for $500 cheaper than he was quoting me, but to anyone with mechanical knowledge - how often is the problem for that EVAC leak code the gas tank itself??? I don't trust this guy, I think he's guessing...

No guarantee its the tank. It could be a bad ball valve on a vent or even a bad gas cap, too.

You need to have a smoke test done to see where the leak is coming from. I would install a new gas cap and then reset the code to see if that was the problem. Sometimes the rubber gasket on the gas cap wears away. If they do not find a gas leak during the smoke test, they may need to replace the tank and the connections to it to make sure it is gone. Sometimes the charcoal canister connections need to be replaced too. I assume your gas mileage has gone done since this happened correct? |
