my dad's GF has a 2002 Ford Taurus SES sedan and when the car is locked for some strange reason the alarm will go off all by itself. and no pressing of any buttons on the remote will shut it off she has to wait the 30 or 40 sec before it stops. any ideas why the alarm would go off without somebody messing with the car or trying to break into it?

The switches located in the door latches get stuck from dirt and cause the system to think the door was opened. Switches are cheap, but putting them in requires removal of the door panel, and loosening the door latches.
Many Fords of that era had this issue. Any Ford tech will tell you that. You need to get the dome lamp switches replaced, and that will solve your issue.

I was thinking the same thing strych9, I will check to see if any of them are sticking and spray some WD40 in there. worst case, i will look into the cost of replacement latch switch.
