GM Production cuts?!?!?

I was told by a fairly knowledgable friend that GM announced this morning that they will not be producing any more cars until the bankruptcy thing is finished...please please PLEASE tell me it aint so!!!

I dont know what they are thinking, there are thousands of people waiting for these cars, if they would work on getting them out to the folks willing to pay for them, the special orders, then they could be getting out of trouble relativly faster, correct?

Uhm what bankruptcy thing? GM is not currently in bankruptcy so it makes absolutely no sense that it would halt production.
I think he's probably talking about Chrysler, which just filed for bankruptcy protection yesterday.

Yeah I know I did hear about that, but he said production cuts all the same. I will look into it when I get home but I am actually supposed to be heading to class. I dont think it would be something they would announce seeing as how they would have A LOT of angry customers.

Sorry but your friend is an idiot. It is true that GM will stop producing SOME vehicles for a 9 week period this summer, however that does not effect the Camaro. Why would GM stop production on the only cars that are already sold?

Camaro is safe and unaffected other than a SMALL (two week?) July shutdown.

Yes, the extended factory breaks are only for US and Mexico plants, not Canada ;-)

Could they attempt making that SMALL break a little larger?

Scott, isn't the 2-week July shutdown usually for the factories to switch over to the next model year of car?

Ok I see your point but explain why they would do that? They have 14,000 vehicles already ordered, that means people are going to pay for those cars...but not until they get them. Shutting down the plant for 2 weeks means that they are delaying their own income. It wouldn't make sense to shut down a plant that is producing a vehicle that dealers can't even keep on their lot.

I have been told that the shutdown will mostly effect trucks and SUVs although it may effect a limited amount of the smaller cars. GM has built up a 6 month supply of most of their trucks and SUVs so it really does not make sense for them to keep making more.
