Yes: Underground - that is the only sure thing. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of the storms. They can be really random with one house completely leveled and a house 10 feet away untouched.

I feel horrible for those affected by these storms.

This happens every year. It's unfortunate, but it happens. A sturdier house will do no good, unless it can withstand 270mph+ winds. They would need windows that could do the same. I'm a storm chaser and am looking forward to being back in Tornado alley. I hope to see some monster storms this year, of course in an open field.

I live in southern Indiana and my town was hit by a tornado a few days ago. It did some damage but no one was injured and only hit a mile away from my apt. It was scary. The sirens didnt go off until it was all ready past. A direct hit couldve killed a lot of people since it hit at 6am. There needs to be a better warning system. A F4 hit here in '05 killing 24 people. Bodies scattered in fields. Again the sirens didnt go off until it had already past. It hit at 2am so many were sleeping. My parents neighborhood was leveled other then 6 houses. Theirs being one that was saved but with a totalled car and over $50k of damage.

Sturdier buildings wont help. The safest place is underground and the town I live in is built on a mine so very few basements here. You just hope for the best when these storms hit. This spring is not going to be fun :(

My heart goes out to those affected and the families who lost loved ones.

It's hard to improve the warning system. There is no way to tell whether or not a tornado is going to form 30 minutes in advance. When there is a possibility for tornadoes, you already get a tornado watch. That in itself, is a "warning". You then get another "warning" when they issue a Tornado warning. If you are worried about this, get yourself a weather radio. It will go off when situations like this arise.

Its kinda silly to me that when the news is telling you to take cover cuz a tornado is already on the ground yet the sirens are still not going off. Y are they not going off? A tornado on the ground is a warning. The threat of conditions is a warning yet no sirens. They are there to warn you if one coming or the potential, but instead its more like an announcement that ones already hit.

A weather radio is a joke. They go off constantly for the slighest thing. Most people I know turn them off cuz of all the silly updates at all hours of the nite.

I completely understand the effects. Last June it was my turn to experience the destruction of a tornado. Never thought about this considering I live in NewEngland. I remember driving home from work and my wife called frantic that a tornado went through my town and another was coming. The phone went dead and now here I was about 10 miles from my home but couldn't get to my wife.
I end up lucky with minor damage to my house even thought the tornado ripped right between my home and the next door nieghbor.
My thoughts and prayers go out to those effected and those helping repair the area.

You do realize that the sirens have to be tripped, right? I don't live where you do, so I don't know how it works there. If you are watching the weather and they put a warning out, you need to quit watching tv and get to cover. Who cares about the sirens. If there is any kind of watch, get ready to move. If there is a warning, get to cover. You shouldn't count on the sirens.

Oh, and you also have to remember, I am the guy that will chase after a massive tornado. I don't hide from them. My duty is to report it back to 911/radio stations/news stations to let the people know where the storms location specifically is.

Your missing my point from my original post, perhaps you need to reread it. The '05 tornado that hit in my town that killed 24 people hit at 2am when many were sleeping so the sirens shouldve been tripped well b4. The news reported a tornado on the ground 20 miles away yet did not set the sirens off until that same tornado traveled that distance on land and continued for 40 miles.

Same thing a few days ago. Tornado on the ground at 6am, well b4 the sirens went off. They are suppose to off wheber a warning is issued and despite having a warning in effect, no siren until the tornado was past. People are asleep and need these sirens to go off sooner. Thats my point.

I dont wait for the sirens to go to hiding, Im not an idiot. But when your asleep at 2am or 6am, it would be nice for a warning with the sirens that somethings coming.
