Oktoberfest 2011

Earlier this year Brad Beardow, co-owner of Fifteen52, PM'ed me on The Car Lounge asking me if I would be interested in covering an event. The event was called "Oktoberfest 2011." I said sure, and then asked what type of event. He told me it was a Euro car show which was to take place in Big Bear Lake, CA in early October. I had that weekend open as there was no Cars and Coffee that day, so I agreed.

I had NEVER been to a Euro car show so I had all kinds of different stereotypical thoughts about the Euro scene streaming through my head. I really didn't know what to expect once I got there. But, even if the show was a bust it was in October which meant that the Oktoberfest celebrations where in full swing up in Big Bear Lake. So, it wouldn't be a complete loss.

I immediately invited my cousins to go with me as I didn't want to drive back on my own all the way from Big Bear Lake, greatly and with some possible libations in me. That day we all packed into a 2011 Nissan Versa rental with a mere 30 miles on it and headed towards Big Bear Lake, not knowing what lay ahead.

Even with our hamster powered Versa, which we nicknamed "Thomas", we still made it up to Snow Summit, which was the events location, fairly early. There was a distinct lack of snow on the ground and few cars present at the time of our arrival. All I could think about was how much fun it would have been to drive my car up the mountain instead of riding in the turnout loving Versa. But, oh well.

Soon, enough though the cars started arriving and it looked like a pretty good show was going to be happening. There where a good couple of Airlift equipped cars, which I have a soft spot for as I grew up in an area with lots of lowriders. Lots of these cars where very well built and every single one was driven up to the show. No trailer queens here. There was even a car club present which came from Baja California, Mexico. I was definitely pleased with the quality of the cars which attended this event. There was definitely some effort put behind them. The crowd was super cool too, a very friendly bunch. Everyone was approachable and everyone was more than willing to talk cars. It was fun watching the air ride equipped cars compete in different contest. The food and beer served was also very good and the prices where more than reasonable. This is an event that I will definitely be looking forward to attending next year.

I know the Euro crowd isn't for everyone, but I hope everyone enjoys the pictures:

Well-executed styling/modding, regardless of a vehicle's country of origin, is always nice to see. Many good examples, here, Leo...well done!
