Lego City Apocolaypse

When I was a kid a used to be a lot more diverse. I spent my summers working on cars learning all I could learn and I also read a lot of books about structural engineering. As I had an interest in buildings I decided to build my own city out of Legos as a high school project and it morphed into the beast you see below. All of these buildings have a full framed skeleton just like real skyscrapers do, the exception being that they are made of plastic. While never totally complete (no budget for Krylon Fusion paint) the last building was put together in 2001 right before I left the folks in Michigan and booked it for Arizona. And thus the city sat for almost 10 years untouched.....

During the 10 years my dad died and it came time for my mom to retire. So on my final visit to the old house I armed myself with an old hammer and shop goggles I went to work creating the simulated Lego Apocolaypse, here are the results:

And thus it was done. Dad and I used to dream up ways the end would come for the citizens of Lego city; by gasoline lit fire in the driveway, by well placed M80s, by simulated earth quake and even letting the dog loose on the table like Godzilla. In the end it was dad's old hammer from the tool box that I wielded like Thor the Thunder God and so it was that end of days came to pass. In the end I ended up packing all those blocks into 5 totes. Mom thinks the grand children will enjoy all those blocks. who wouldn't.

Problem was mom was moving to Florida and the costs of moving those buildings intact would have been way out of control. If you look close you can see the building labels I made that went along with a grid map for moving the buildings, some times things don't work out.

I'll tell you it wasn't as easy as it might look. I started to film the destruction until I realized the buildings would stay standing with holes punched clear through them. Towards the end there was a one really big building that got all twisted and contorted but didn't want to come down. That one took about 30 something hammer hits before it came down. In total it took about 2 hours to bring all the buildings down and another 2 to break them down into chunks that could fit in the tubs. Luckily those little bricks are a lot more durable then they look and can be reused.

Now sort them by color

Then, when you decide to rebuild, you won't need the Krylon
