New Car MPG Politics

How will Obama's new car MPG regs affect my ability to purchase a 2SS in a couple years? Anybody have any insight?

not sure what obama has anything to do with this? high gas mileage cars have been talked about for a while. and at 26 MPG I doubt they will be going anywhere

Article here

"Automakers say they expect to easily meet the 2011 standard, and they have raised no objections."

I hope that that statement means camaro powertrain won't be limited... as I plan on buying in about a year.

Thats a video about this ridiculousness. Apparently California wants to have a mpg regulation, they want 35MPG by 2011, and 40+ later from all auto makers. Its insane... they discuss how its much more expensive to create these cars, and these cars already barely sell, and currently theres like 3 cars which qualify for Cali's laws. I really hope FL doesnt follow suit!

If the EPA gave the V6 DOHC a 29 Highway rating, imagine what a 6.3L DI DOHC V8 could bring us? You do recall that such a motor was in the works to supplant the Vortec Truck series in order to meet CAFE standards?

And what Ford is doing with the Coyote motor is more or less what will help all companies both Foreign and Domestic under CAFE. Toyota and Honda won't be safe forever, especially with their SUVs which AFAIK still sell like hotcakes regardless of fuel economy. Corp averages of 40+ are doable if the DI V6/I4 and Camaro are any indication.

Yes, I said 40+. We are on the cusp of some seriously insane engine design thinking. And that's across the industry board.

My state sucks - ya'll know that. I don't attribute this to the current administration because my crappy state's leaders have been working on this garbage for a long time. I don't know if anyone knows, but you know what CARB-approved parts and what-not are, right? Well, my sheety state even has CARB-approved lawn equipment... I don't know if you guys, outside of California, has this stuff, but it's rediculous. I take every chance to run my two-cycle lawn equipment and burp that beautiful blue smoke all over the place. I think I might just run it in my car, driving around town, for no reason except to do it.

GOD CALIFORNIA SUCKS!!! STAY AWAY!!! It's a black hole of anything good. If I could leave, I would.

The old cars should be fine, they can't take them off the road, at least not yet.

Problem is gonna be production costs and penalties. The more SS's made the cheaper future prices. The less then they might just become more unique collectors$$.

Actually, Rad.. We just picked up our 4th Stihl Quasi-2 cycle Cali-conforming weed whacker. I love the damn things. IMO they are actually much MORE powerful and do a BETTER job than our older 2 cycle Stihls (which we sorely just want to run over..again). We've moved away from 2 cycle backpack units and it's been a GOOD thing due to the amount of power we gained and as such, the gained productivity.

Hell, even Toro has stopped selling 2 Cycle walk behinds, and our new 4 Cycle (Cali Conformer :/) which we picked up 2 years ago still amazes me due to the fact that we dropped the damn thing out of a pickup and it still works.. (mind you after new wheels and a partial drive train replacement) ..Unlike our old 2 cycles (which are 3-5 years old now) that would wind up in the shop because "whoops, grass was too long."

Though I despise California for supplanting myself in defining "Wat", their bitching as brought some unconventional thinking to engine and machine design that is kinda cool. Heck, I may be puffing too much, but if you think of what the TV industry could do to keep selling 40 inchers in cali.. we could get some flipping sweet TVs.

Except the paint thing. They can lick-clean my hiney hole after some taco induced diarrhea for that.

Actually, I think the first few year runs of the LS3/L99 motor may be no more valuable down the road than a 4th gen. If you look up the prospective DI V8 numbers, and think of what they did to the DIV6 in our 5th Gens.. We could be looking at the 13/14 MY Camaros being the more expensive collector car due to HOLY SHEET STAWK HORSEPOWAR AND TORKS numbers. The older cars would look better on cruises and in museums, rather than being raced actively and getting regularly spanked by 13/14 CHALLENGERS in the TWISTIES.

Yeah, I went there. Hence my title thing. I've seen a light that's made me an optimist.

Why?

Because Big Detroit Iron is going to come back and kick some ass no matter what the hybrid/ricer naysayers may PMS about this week. When we're backed into a corner, humans use their noggins to get out of a pinch. This is no different than Ogg fighting the Tiger, or Cpl. Jimmy fighting off some Taliban Fairy Boys because he shaved his beard wrong.

Put some 20 megaton nukes on the fault line. We have like 50 of them in storage.

Maybe it will fall off and sink into the Pacific and do us all a favor.

HEEY.. don't go irradiating my Las Vegas. MOABs and Paveways will do the job just fine for a conventional weapon.

That's why they deleted the Politics forum and made it a rule not to talk about Politics.

Cause it get's too rowdy. Of course it's a joke. I realize your point but it's just the way we do it. Innovation and pollution control should be something we do but not at the cost of our Pursuit of Happyness and or kissing the arse of China (kyoto wanted to give China a 100% pass).

Good points. I don't have any CARB-approved equipment, but know I was going to be paying $100 more for the same thing without the approval, and that was jsut BS to me. HOWEVER, if it makes the product better, as you've observed, I have NO problem with that; it's when the product gets worse is where I have the problem.

Thanks for the input though. I thought for sure the newer stuff was going to be rubbish but it looks like I'm wrong.

Please give me a heads-up so I can stay on the American side of the fault and not the communist side, LOL! I tell you; some of these hippies are so bad it might be a suprise how much they try to regulate. Like I said: stay away; far away.
