Watchmen

Amazing, but "sweet baby Jesus" don't take anyone under at least 17 lol. There was a huge like, cluster#@$% of ideas and internal conflict and the movie makes you think but yeah, it is violent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen

"Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. The series was published by DC Comics in single issues during 1986 and 1987, and has been subsequently reprinted in collected form. Watchmen originated from a story proposal Moore submitted to DC featuring superhero characters that the company had acquired from Charlton Comics. As Moore's proposed story would have left many of the characters unusable for future stories, managing editor Dick Giordano convinced the writer to create original characters instead.

Moore used the story as a means to reflect contemporary anxieties and to deconstruct the superhero concept. Watchmen takes place in an alternate history United States where the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, freelance costumed vigilantes have been outlawed and most costumed superheroes are in retirement or working for the government. The story focuses on the personal development and struggles of the protagonists as an investigation into the murder of a government sponsored superhero pulls them out of retirement and eventually leads them to confront a plot by one of their own to stave off nuclear war by killing millions of innocent people."

Hope that helps, Tony!

"Watchmen was the only graphic novel to appear on Time's 2005 list of "the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present"

From the Wiki article. Also, here's the link:

Err...absolutely nothing to do with X-men. No similarity. Unless you think one superhero is a rip off of another because they both wear costumes. It was a graphic novel, and after going to the movie- it has a much deeper meaning than any x-men movie ever will.

Why do people keep saying it was a graphic novel?

It was a comic book! Twelve issues, by DC.

I can use wikipedia too-

A graphic novel is a type of comic book, usually with a lengthy and complex storyline similar to those of novels, and aimed at all audiences, generally speaking. The term also encompasses comic short story anthologies, and in some cases bound collections of previously published comic book series (more commonly referred to as trade paperbacks).

Graphic novels are typically bound in longer and more durable formats than familiar comic magazines, using the same materials and methods as printed books, and are generally sold in bookstores and specialty comic book shops rather than at newsstands.

The evolving term graphic novel is not strictly defined, and is sometimes used, controversially, to imply subjective distinctions in artistic quality between graphic novels and other kinds of comics.

Yes, a graphic novel is a type of comic book. Just like squares are a type of rectangle. That does not mean the terms are synonymous.

And no, I did not just pull my info from wikipedia. I am a certified comic book geek with over 750 comic books.

Well to set it straight: Watchmen was the comic that made comics not just a thing for kids. And rightfully so..as this wouldn't be something you'd want little 10 year old Timmy reading.

Not that he'd really understand the whole damn thing either. <_< I still want to see it though..

My bad - it obviously is controversial. But I could really car less about how the original came out. They sell them in graphic novel format now. In the present. Currently. (get my point). By the way a square isn't a type of rectangle, it's a type of parallelogram.

Heh - me too. I'm going tomorrow after the okc auto show.

And yes, Watchmen broke new ground in the comic book industry, for sure.

Yeah, I recall hearing that many classic comic heros also got similar makeovers during the late 80s around the time Watchmen debuted. May not have been the original ground breaker, but it might as well be the figurehead of the whole movement.
