Got pulled over for first time

Just got pulled for the first time today...totally my fault. I was heading to a local gun show and took a route to it that I had never drove. Coming into a town and the speed limit dropped from 55 to 35 and I didnt notice the change. Patrol car on opposite side of the road and as we pass each other I see him swerve to the right of his lane and hit the lights. He does his U-turn and I am already looking for a good spot to pull over.

Once i'm pulled over, I know that I have to roll my tinted window down and it hasn't been the reccomended 3 days since they were tinted but I hope it is dry enough. Luck has it that the tint held fast. The officer walks up his first words are "I know it's an awesome car but DAMN, you was clocked at 51 in a 35". I immediately hand him my license and CCW permit and inform him that I am not carrying but that there is an AR-15 in the trunk that I am on my way to try to sell at the gun show. He asked if I have any points on my license and I replied "No sir and I really hope that I dont when we are done". He says he will see what we can do. He proceeds back to his car and runs my info and sees that i have a spotless driving record. When he came back to my car he leaned way down so he could see my son in the passenger seat. He asked my son how old he was and I'm instantly thinking "oh crap he is gonna bust me and take my license and make my son drive". My son said "15" the officer says to me "your son?" I nodded yes. He said, look at the example you are setting. He let me off with a warning then he said, lets see that AR that you want to sell. I popped the trunk with the release on the drivers door and stood at a short distance while he pulled it from the trunk. He loved the rifle and asked the price.

Now for the odd part. He says "that one is just a bit more decked out than mine" in a sarcastic voice while smiling and he motions me to the rear of his patrol car. He opens the trunk and hands me his unloaded AR. I looked at it for maybe 20sec and then handed it back to him saying that I really didnt want anyone to see me with HIS rifle in my hands. He laughed and said "anyone with a problem with it can kiss my arse".

This guy was totally cool and I saw him again walking into the gun show. He looked at me and waved, I asked him if he was following me around and grinned. Once inside the show he showed my AR to a couple of his co-workers. but none of them bought it.

This is the one I had in the trunk.

haha just noticed that you also have an Avalanche. I traded in my 2002 Avalanche for the Camaro. My Avalanche had 44k miles and about 3 grand worth of stereo in it. The dealership sold my Avalanche the next day to a 20yr old guy.

But wait... aren't all cops crooked, as*holes, that make only 35k?! Oh nevermind, those were the ignorant generalizations in other threads. You acted cool with the guy, and in turn he gave you a warning. I think that's all most cops want is to be treated with respect and have people accept responsibility. They don't get paid to be sh*t on, they get paid to enforce the laws. I think they'd be happy in going home at the end of the day knowing they enforced the laws and didn't necessarily have to give the decent people tickets.

Lots to be learned from your first contact. You did the right thing in providing the information up front and of course transporting the rifle in the trunk. We might be seeing a different kind of post (and/or news article) if you had that rifle in the passenger seat with you or even in the backseat.

I like that he showed you his. Haha. I've got an AR-15 but I don't carry it with me. I don't think there's enough room in my car for all the magazines and ammo I have saved up.

Anyway, good story!

Yeah I forgot to add that to my generalizations... much like, "Cops just stopped me to harass me". That's always a good one too.

I have yet to encounter a Texas LEO who had a problem with the good guys being armed. I think they appreciate the backup.

Great story! It's obvious from reading it that if you just step back and act like a human being, you're probably gonna come out of the encounter a-ok, Thanks for sharing.

I have had Eotech, Aimpoint, and numerous other CQ sights. I like the Eotech hands down better than all the others I have tried. Everyone has opinions on different ones and that is a good thing...keeps more companys open and more Americans working. Eotech is just my preference.
