Well...this just happened last night..

Drove car earlier yesterday. Thought I heard a metallic noise coming from the rear. Pulled over and didn't see anything. Went about my night. I didn't hear anything anymore. A few hours later I pulled into the local grocery store, shifted into first and BAM.
Loud noise and the car no longer could move:

This is the driver side axel. The bolts completely walked themselves out. None are twisted or broken off.
I just had the rear differential "groan" service done. Did they need to remove the axel to do the service for whatever reason? I'm not looking to blame the technician or anything, I'm just weirded out that the bolts must have been very loose for them to back out like they did. This tells me someone loosened them and never torqued them in. The car has 8700 miles. If this was factory, I would think that would have happened a long time ago.

Let me know what you fine people think.

Quite a few cases of those bolts coming loose and falling out. There is an information bulletin that advise technicians to replace the bolts if removed and to measure the new fasteners as the replacements may have shorter bolts - which means they may have been packaged wrong. This probably means that the cars were built with shorter bolts but unless one takes them out and measure them - there isn't proof of that.

The bulletin does not say to replace the bolts for any other problem.

You don't have to remove the axle to replace the fluid so it's unlikely they were ever removed.

Given the increase in cases might be worth it for owners to file a defect petition instead of the usual complaints: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/06/b...ons-nhtsa.html

Very well known issue with the half shaft bolts at the differential. As said the fix is new bolts that are longer and the tech is supposed to mark them after they are installed and torqued so to make sure they dont move again.

Hi guys, I had the same accident as You 2 weeks ago. My camaro is SS 2016 and it has 25000 km course. My left axle is broken like in your cars. Unfortunately I live in Poland and we dont have authorized dealer here.
So could You telle me if I need more parts to repair it, or just left axle (nr 84211209).
Do You know if this part contains package of screws (long 57mm) and nuts needed to connect it to the diferential? - if no, what are numbers of this parts (11601876?) and how many I need it - I want to change it for left and right side to longer screws.

And tell me please if when You repaired Your cars - there was some other demages, and you needed to repair for exaplme diferential or drive shaft?

Thank You for help

The bolts are longer and have serrated lock washers on them. The parts come inpaired bolts (so two bolts together). I think each axle takes three (3) pairs per side. I would replace both side, so six (6). PN is on the forum somewhere.

Hello friend,

Ok these are the two part numbers that my dealer ordered which includes the entire half axel: 84211209 and 84080683
The service advisor explained it comes with the new longer bolts and they’re replacing everything just to be safe.
Also my wife is polish so powodzenia!

I think everyone our MY should check. I wish I had come across the previous threads earlier, I would have checked and gotten it fixed when my rear diff was being done two weeks ago.
