Most of Americans support Federal aid to the Automakers

Using GM-supplied questions (I assume), an independant surevy organization conducted a national poll to find out how Americans feel about this Big 3 issue. Turns out better than [ I ] expected.

From FastLane blog:

Quote:
Today, Peter D. Hart Research Associates released a poll taken this week to gauge public opinion about federal assistance to U.S. automakers. The results show that a majority of Americans – 55 percent - believe that the U.S. government should aid the automakers, while only 30 percent oppose such assistance. The poll also reveals that when respondents learned some basic facts about the role that the automakers play in the U.S. economy, 76 percent of respondents predicted that the collapse of the auto industry would be “extremely likely” or “very likely” to trigger an economic depression.

While we find these numbers sobering, we are heartened to see that Americans understand the impact and importance of our industry. We also understand that people expect us to be accountable for the assistance we receive. With 84 percent of respondents saying that the collapse of the domestic auto industry would harm the U.S. economy, we know that this issue is a very important one for the American public right now. Please feel free to share these results with anyone you know who would like to gain a better understanding of the current crisis.

According to the information in front of me, this is a sound poll with reliability that is on par with the best policy-oriented polling available.

This is good information.

Hey I say ....

increase the Tax on those damn Importers some more, make them come out of pocket, they are part of the reason why the big 3 is in this mess

I wonder how many of the 55% knew the average UAW worker makes approx 2-3 times that of the average American worker and approx 60% more than other US auto workers.

Flush it and reorganize. Why should I be taxed to subsidize a worker making double my pay (with quite a bit less education). In the long run, it is the only way GM can be viable. And the only way for our economy to be viable.

If you are refering to chapter 11 vs a loan . . . as I understand it, a bankrupt GM would cost tax-payers much more than a few billion dollars worth of loan swill. In the end, the loans will be paid back with interest. A bankrupt GM will pass on billions of dollars worth of costs to taxpayers.

Is that right?

Because our sales reports sure aren't reflecting that attitude.

Hey America. Do you really want to help GM, Ford, and Chrysler? Then quit buying imports and buy our freaking cars. Not that hard.

I'd rather let any of the big three fail then prop them up and be in the exact same position not too long in the future. Yeah, thousands of people would be out of jobs, but maybe that would help people realize that things like healthcare, retirement, etc. are benefits, not entitlements and are simply one of the tools businesses have to entice workers to come to work for them.

Hmm...

Malibu/G6/Aura = Best in class fuel efficiency.
Malibu = Best midsize sedan in initial quality.
Cobalt/G5 XFE = Best in class fuel efficiency.
GMT-900 trucks/SUVs? No question there as to who builds the best trucks.
Lambda platform crossovers? Again, no question.
CTS-V = Fastest production sedan in the world.

Right, we have the truck/SUV market, but those sales have come down drastically
And the Malibu is an amazing car,

but what we need is an American Corolla. I've never driven a Cobalt or G5 but I can tell you that the styling does not appeal to as many people as something like a corolla and they both cost more.

I just think that if GM ever came out with a good-looking small sedan that started at 15,000, well, they'd sell a lot of those.
