Healthy Dieting
So I know we treat our Camaro's with the best product, but how do we do when it comes to treating our body the same way?
Now, i'm not overweight at all. I'm 150 pounds at 24yo, about 5'10. But I have been eating more bad food then good all my life (breaded chicken, corn dogs, pizza, chips, bad beef, chocolate, all the processed foods you can think of etc etc and the occasional salad), leading to bad acid reflux, being sick every few months, accute tonsillitis (separately from always being sick), and some nasty anxiety with the occasional anxiety attack. So I figured that if I want to change myself, I need to change what I eat. For the last 3 days I've been dieting off organic veggies and fruits, free range grass fed chicken and cow, caged free chicken eggs, mountain spring water, etc. I feel a tiny bit better but I know it'll be a long journey before I really start feeling a difference. Next on the list is to go back to the gym and bring exercise back into my life. Anybody have any input, similar stories or any words of advice? I'm excited to be doing this

One word, Moderation.
I have tried a number of diets being in the 40+ age range, and packing on the extra pounds now that I am no longer young, the one thing that I constantly get good results from is moderation. Don't eat seconds, understand portion control and buckle down, it will be tough, but it can be done.

Even being in your early 30s like me makes it quite difficult. I wish I had started earlier.

I only drink water and black coffee (when im not drinking beer) Its amazing how many empty calories people drink. Don't drink juice, that crap will kill you. its all sugar and caloric dense.

Simple answer is clean eating. Eliminate everything that is not real food. No chemicals, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors, Trans fats. Severely limit refined sugars, white flour, animal fats, cut out those sodas & other drinks that are empty calories. Avoid GMO's. That is just a good start. Stay in the outer isles of the grocery store, fresh meats, poultry & fish, fresh produce & simply frozen foods. Stay away from processed foods (bags, cans, boxes & jars & prepared frozen). Then understand the proper portion sizes, how to get the right amount of protein & the right balance of good carbs & lots of non-starchy vegetables. Then know when to eat which of them in several smaller meals a day instead of 2-3 big ones. And of course get plenty of exercise, both cardio & muscle building. There are no short cuts unfortunately. The book is pretty heavy reading & it takes a while to get it all but it works. Discipline is the hardest part. Good luck with your quest.

Definitely start now. Definitely drink lots of water. And, what helped me: I challenged myself to going to the gym every day for 30 days. Posted on Facebook for public accountability. Updated daily. Even if I just did treadmill or elliptical, it really got me started. Oh, and there's a 30-day plank challenge, too. Minimal time investment. Try it out. GOOD luck! You're on the right path.

Right on! and avoid any food or drinks with High fructose corn syrup. You would be amazed how much that stuff gets used, bread, ketchup, soda pop is the worst. Its in everything!

I started officially dieting February 1 of this year after the official health scare of being a member of the over 40 club. My official weight was 258, today my weight is 195 I'm still 20 shy of my goal of 175.
Portion control is huge I only eat around 1500 calories or so a day, I use myfitnesspal app to track calories for the day. As well as exercise. I bought a new road bike. I ride nearly every day sometimes twice a day. The reality is the wright won't come off its self, you actually have to get off your ass and get moving it really works it's crazy but it works, it's hard works but it's worth it. |

Thanks a ton for your input everybody!
For those of you who wish you've done it earlier, it's never too late to start now. It's as easy as skipping canned soup at the grocery store for organic veggies and dishing out a little extra money to buy quality meats, then make yourself some lunch and pack for work or whatever. Just DON'T EAT OUT. I don't see anything wrong with the occasional beer and cigar, but that you must moderate. I saw the documentaries "fat, sick and almost dead" and "health, inc." and both of those docs are what got me into trying this out. Since i've started my diet I've actually felt a little more tired and hungrier then usual, but I think that's just because I've never done this before. |

Yeah, I found out I was diabetic a couple of years ago and sadly it changed the way I eat completely, but, it's a lot more healthy. I changed from white to brown rice, only whole wheat bread, all sweet potatoes instead of white, and watch the sugar in everything. It's shocking when you read the labels how much sugar is in things you wouldn't suspect.
