Radiation levels on Mars: not all that bad actually
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/50072690/#.UL48r4O7PB8
So far, it's pretty comparable to the radiation levels astronauts get in the space station, pretty promising! Curiosity received a lot more radiation on the trip to Mars than on the surface so far, so we just need to figure out how to shield the ship that makes the voyage.

Interesting read. I'm very interested in seeing how exactly they prepare a spacecraft to make the journey. I would think it would be extremely boring until you got to mars.

Really interesting, I'm looking forward to see what they do next honestly... I wonder what there is for possibly looking into faster ships, so it doesn't take half a year to get there. 180 days is basically waiting for a problem to occur.

I imagine 60 days at twice the speed would provide roughly 4 times as many possible "problems"

...she died a few hours after launch from heat stress because the Soviets couldn't build heat shields worth a damn.

The VASIMR engine is supposed to be capable of cutting down the travel time quite a bit, though it would probably require a small nuclear fission reactor to power it... which I'm actually all for, as the ship that goes to Mars will likely be the first true space only vehicle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variabl...oplasma_Rocket Plus, on a geekier level, the glow from this thing at full power looks like the engine glow from ships in Star Wars

Mars curiosity mission is the ultimate distraction
mars curiosity is a story designed to keep the public conditioned to think that our technological advancements are "not" 100 years more advanced than what they think it is.
