the best thing about shooting professional fireworks....
is that no show is ever the same.
Every show has its inherent dangers. It comes with the territory. This one in particular started out as a decent sized show for the "Tigerama", the Clemson University football homecoming. Originally, I was to be chasing down the tubes during the show and lighting any shells that failed to launch from the electronic keyboard. Then the state fire marshal decided to show up and said that he didn't feel comfortable having someone hand light a "dud". so we rearranged the game plan and I'd stay close and just "watch" the shells just in case. then after a point, I'd pull the welding tarps off the finale and get ready to rock and roll. well, as I'm waiting for my cue to prep the finale, I heard a sizzle instead of a "fwoomp!" from the body of the show. and just as I turned to look.... I saw the flash....

two tubes blew out. destroyed the rack and the one next to it (cant see the second one's damage in the pic). and sent shrapnel flying in just about every direction except for directly at the ends of the rack. and it just so happened that I was at a nice... 45* angle to the rack and caught a body full of plastic, wood/splinters, and red hot embers from the shell exploding.
![]() 3rd degree burns, imbedded plastic and wood, parts of the screws that held the racks together, all of it went flying. but I managed to slow down a bunch of it using my body as a shield... but luckily I was wearing my protective gear and was much more fortunate as to not receive any damage/harm unlike the guy in this picture. still dont know who he is...

aaaaaaaaaaaaand... you don't want a whole bunch of product sitting inside metal containers when you are running an electronically fired show. or a barge show where it is metal on metal contact and the smallest electrical charge could set the whole place ablaze. kinda like this show.... ![]() and in all actuality, the steel tubing, if you were to make it light enough, would be thinner than the composite we use now. and, even the thickest tube of whatever material can be blown open when the lift charge doesn't propel the product out of the tube and subsequently it explodes in the tube. the ones that blew were 5" shells. in the air, they would explode to a diameter of around 500ft. package that into a tight area and blow it. makes a killer light show. for reference... http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...ight=fireworks

I'm always ok. it takes more than thousands of pounds of high explosives and shrapnel to keep me down.
