General Motors announced Monday it plans to slash 14,700 jobs — about 15 percent of its North American workforce — and possibly close up to five domestic plants.
The reduction in force includes 8,100 white-collar employees who'll be targeted via buyouts and layoffs and about 6,000 factory workers will also lose jobs, although some may transfer to truck plants.

The factories to be closed currently produce cars that are not sold in the United States.
GM also announced it'll be closing a Canadian plant, costing about 2,500 jobs.
“These actions will increase the long-term profit and cash generation potential of the company and improve resilience through the cycle,” GM CEO Mary Barra.
GM said the impacted plants include: Oshawa Assembly in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly in Detroit; Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio; Baltimore Operations in White Marsh, Maryland; and Warren Transmission Operations in Warren, Michigan.

“I am deeply frustrated with General Motors’ decision to shut down its Lordstown plant and disappointed with how the hardworking employees there have been treated throughout this process," U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said in a statement.
