Original bumblebee was a VW Beetle, but hasn't been since 2002-2003 because VW refused to license the character for re-release. Reason being that the toys are associated with violence
Interesting tidbit about the movie:
Bumblebee is the only Transformer that will be built for the movie, the rest of the Autobots and Decepticons will be CGI.
