2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows Championship Edition - Auto Shows

The Latest in the Long Line of Long-Named Corvettes

BY STEVE SILER, February 2007

Just what the world needs: another tongue-twisting, commemorative edition Corvette. And this one, the limited-production white-and-red 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows Championship Edition, could have the longest name yet.

As you will see, each part conveys important information:

• 2007 = the only year this car will be built

• Chevrolet = you should know that one

• Ron Fellows = a very talented driver

• ALMS = American Le Mans [racing] Series

• GT1 = Grand Touring, [class] 1, the specific class in which Fellows and the Corvette Racing team compete

• Championship = the thing that everyone’s so happy about winning

• Corvette Z06 = oh yeah, the car itself

And if you think that’s long, just be thankful that they didn’t spell it all out. Otherwise it would have been 2007 Ron Fellows American Le Mans Series Grand Touring Class 1 Champion Corvette Z06. By the time you got all of that out of your mouth, the car itself could have gone from zero to 100 miles per hour and back to zero again.

Indeed, it seems that Chevrolet worked harder to modify the name of this commemorative Vette than the car itself. On the outside, the RFALMSGT1 Z06 features chrome wheels, a low-profile rear spoiler and a windshield banner. The Fellows Vette is also the first Z06 to wear Arctic White paint, which is in turn adorned with red-and-silver hash-style stripes on the front fenders that recall those on the Corvette GT1 racecar that Fellows has driven to victory. The red-and-white paint scheme, to say nothing of the maple leaf logo incorporated into the graphics, make Fellows’ nationality rather obvious. Fellows’ autograph can be found on one of the fender stripes.

Inside, “tech pattern” accents compliment red leather on the seats, console and door panels. The red armrest features yet another Fellows signature.

Is it faster? Nope. Pricier? Of course. At $77,500 ($79,945 if you specify navigation and OnStar), including destination, this Z06 costs roughly $7,500 more than the standard-fare Z06. Still, Chevrolet shouldn’t have much trouble unloading the 399 Fellows Z06s (only 33 of which are heading to Canada) currently planned for sale starting this spring.
