General Motors saw a 3.4% sales increase last month compared to February 2006, the company said today.

GM sold 311,763 vehicles in February.

The company said its retail sales increased 11% while its fleet sales were down 18% as part of a planned 25%-reduction in daily rental sales.

The company credits the sales gain to the new GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickups.

The Silverado had its best February in five years. Full-size pickup sales were up 29% and total truck sales were up 7% in February compared to the same month last year. GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook drove a 97% retail increase in the mid-crossover segment.

"Our pickup, SUV and crossover business was terrific across the board. Our customers are telling us that we have the winning formula — the best products, industry-leading fuel economy and the best value," Mark LaNeve, vice president of GM North American sales, service and marketing, said in a statement.
