Beware Long Post!!

New guy here.

Before i say anything remember that every case is different no two ratings cases are the same. There is also a big difference between Military Disability and VA Disability Compensation. I dont want to get anyones hopes up.

One of my buddies i served in the Corps with cannot lift his right arm above about 30degrees. He was one of three in my platoon, including me, who had neurological complications after a round of smallpox and anthrax vaccinations. Anyways, the cause of his condition is different but the lack of use and range of motion seems the same. He is rated 50% for disability pension from the military. VA claim pending.

I was medically discharged from the Marine Corps, but at a 0% rating. I was rated by the VA at 80%. The two systems are completely different and serve different purposes. The military compensates you for the loss of a career. The VA compensates you on the severity of your medical condition no matter what grade you were or how long you were in. If your VA rating comes back around the same as your military rating take the VA. That is all tax free. Im sure you know, you are paying taxes on the pension.

Plus, the VA will pay you extra money to go back to school and pay for your food and rent and find you a part time job with the Vocational Rehab Program. They also take into consideration your ability to work in their rating making a rating of 100% ($2,500 tax free) a good possibility. Dont feel bad going to the VA for help, these programs were set up to help warriors like us.
For me, the psycological transition from Marine to civilian was and is the hardest part.

I was kicked out with nothing more than my unused leave. A year later and i have a great job, 2 cars paid off, a wife and cash to buy a 2010 SS.

Good things come to those who work hard and deserve it. There wouldnt be good times without the bad.

P.S. I am very familiar with the whole process if you have any questions.
