I totally think that MotorTrend got spanked by GM Corporate for their initial glowing review of the ZL1 which basically came across as "Why buy a Corvette?"
Everything since then has been more about keeping the cars in their "Place" or hierarchy if you will. When I saw they put in the ZL1 1LE manual as the quarter mile contender this idea was solidified. It's no secret that the ZL1 A10 is a better quarter mile car than any other variant and the 1LE has way more aero drag as it's not a 1/4 mile specific car.
