I can see that. Good for quick questions/updates, seeing if someone is available, and provides a transcript of conversations that can be referenced later if need be. And all of it done from the computer you're already working at using a single program. That would be very handy in an office with more than a couple dozen people, or in an industrial setting where there are mini offices scattered over several acres of factory.
I've only ever worked in offices with less than 10 people. So it never made sense to use anything like that. Its always been as simple as either standing up or turning around & just asking the person directly for something.
