For high speeds, lets say your already at pedal to the medal maybe pushing 130 mph and unable to gain that burst of speed any longer, just momentum building up quickly - would this mean that if you were manually selecting the gear and chose to downshift one or two gears, it would outperform the automatic sport mode or is the car just unable to provide that push regardless of the mode?

Don't own an auto, but at 130 I'm just shifting into 5th, because I want to. In 5th, at a smidge more than 5k rpm's, it's hitting almost 160. Don't go by what you see, go by what you feel.
