Against these people, caliber doesn't matter, what matters is shot placement. Most people say aim for center mass but that's wrong, it's too low. You need to aim for a 3" circle centered around a point 2" below the shoulder line. One shot here will drop a person unless they are on drugs. This is why you carry something you can control and have experience shooting. I carry a 9mm for this reason and cause I'll take 15 chances to hit that circle over 7 any day.
Now the 9mm 15 round debate is not as widespread especially with higher ft lb energy 9mm has too. My xd mod 2 holds 9+1 rounds super conceal in my pocket or 13+1 rounds full mag 3.3" barrel of .45. So does the rest of my .45 pistols. This is why I am not a huge 1911 fan any more. Great to look at and shoot on the range but big heavy and low capacity. I also feel very comfortable shooting a 3.3" Federal HST .45 +P hollow point rounds all day.

I agree 100% on shot placement and alot of rounds just in case. My rothco jacket carries two full size pistols and 4 extra mags. My tru spec pants carry 4 extra mags. Really for conceal carry that is a insane amount of rounds (132) to get you back to your car. Then down here people have their ar-15 or shotgun in trunk to get you home.
