FWIW, at not quite 70 (with a 20+ year old lens implant in my right eye) I'm probably not going to get into competitive shooting. Something between budget and $900, maybe $1k to go down to the range with (and consistently outshoot my son and his guns with ) ought to be about right.

I would suggest talking to a local competition 1911 gun builder. I know one here that would make a great shooting 1911 in this price range. Remember it is just for shooting nothing fancy or expensive. No special coatings, etchings, dimples etc. That is when builds get expensive. Could buy the parts off of brownells. In fact some one just recently built a caspian framed 1911 on this thread not too long ago if my memory is correct.
