Of course it's not full proof, but the CHANCES of success would have been tremendous, had they run the ball out. It's what most teams do, to win games when they are up that much. There is a reason why statistically, teams that are ahead late in the game, have better rushing numbers, and teams that are behind have better passing numbers.
