I was reading an article the other day about how expanding the playoff bracket would simply lead to crappier regular season games. Take the Ohio State-Michigan game. In a six or eight team playoff, both teams are in, no matter what. The game would've still been intense due to the rivalry but there wouldn't be as much at stake. Then the #7/8 teams or #9/10 teams would start complaining they were left out.
Every other team sport i.e. basketball, baseball, hockey, has an expanded playoff. The lower level football in the NCAA has a bigger playoff I believe. It's still a "beauty" contest, with voting instead of playing the game determines who gets in and thusly has the opportunity to win the championship. All the teams have lost but Bama, so they all have shown they can be beaten. Who's to say that Penn state, or USC, or UM, or some other team who gets in couldn't beat a team that all the experts say couldn't win? We just had an election where all the so called experts said this person doesn't have a chance to win and that person ended up winning. The football bounces funny and strange things happen on the gridiron, if we have four to five weeks of bowl games and mini-playoffs, why not have a bigger playoff field. Does haveing wild card teams in the NFL and MLB make those regular seasons 'less' important or entertaining, or the Super Bowl or the World Series less of an event. I think it makes them more legitamet championships. Less voting and talking about who is better and more settling it with the completion on the field. And yes ,I'd rather have the discussion about the 9,10th ranked teams,or the 13,14th ranked teams getting left out of an opportunity than five and six. If you take Bama out of the mix, teams 2-10 all can beat each other on any Saturday, especially on a neutral field. In fact some of those teams have beaten each other. None of this is 'sour grapes' about the Wolverines not getting in, they choked away their chance like they usually due. Just think, there are four number ones in the basketball tourney and a little less than half of the time a number one seed doesn't win, with four number ones!
