It needs to. The 3.0L's a good engine only for smaller cars. The reason it's getting such dismal fuel economy ratings (26 in the LaCrosse vs 27 for the 3.6L in the same car) is because the engine has to rev up to 5100 RPM or something to hit its maximum torque output.

Holden figured out how to get it working right in the Commodore and the 3.0L SIDI is doing amazing there, over 30 MPG in a RWD full size car. Problem is, the EPA wouldn't let GM use Holden's tune in the states.
