I like this thread, simply because it lets me know that there are still SOME out there who do give a rat's ass about proper grammar. I will rarely correct anybody (it seems to be a general consensus that CORRECTING a person is a greater crime that the error itself), but damn if I don't roll my eyes, and knock a few IQ points off, using my personal grading system. Yes, I judge, just like that ol' English teacher said that people would do.
I recently saw on a local forum, a post from a college student. It read, "i was hpe that somebodys would help me with some money as im a starving colege studnet and want to get enouf moneys to finnis my school to be smarter for a good job to have for more money so if you could help me with that god bless"
Believe it or not, community members opened up their wallets and purses to help this adorable young girl. I'm a pretty generous guy... but I could not find one ounce of generosity towards this chick. If she can't even produce a written line, while claiming to be a college student, then there's absolutely no hope. She is either dumb as a sack of hammers (sorry, sacks of hammers everywhere... no insult intended), or she just does NOT G.A.F. I suspect both. You won't find me donating to that cause.
A teacher recently busted somebody out in a group conversation we were having. Somebody had used improper grammar, and the teacher said, "That's grammarically incorrect." I took much grammar- Nazi pleasure in correcting the teacher's correction.
There is a time and place to not care... texting your wife, for example: She already knows if you are intelligent or not, so there's no need to maintain correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. However, public postings, job resumes, professional/ business emails, posted signage, and dozens of other situations call for putting just a TINY little bit of effort into demonstrating that you are smart enough to know how to write.
I will not hire anybody who has did lots of jobs before. I will not buy tires that have lots of threads left... even when they are for sell for a good price. I won't do business with a place that advertises that they, "buy and sell used car" (I just saw that yesterday!). I make my judgements, and maybe that makes me a dick. However, it gives me guilty pleasure to know that for some, being dumb--- or not GAF--- is NOT paying off for them.
