You must have bad luck with getting a hold of bad examples of GM automatics especially since most of my cars since the late 60's were mostly GM automatics with no failures or problems at all. My one import car was also equipped with a GM automatic, BMW 525, and the transmission was the most cost efficient thing on that car believe you me. I usually put high miles on my cars and trucks so I'm not a low mileage trade them in kinda guy.
GM has had some issues especially the early 700R's from the early 80's which readily comes to mind but I will concede that tuning plays a big factor in what people think of with regards to if its crap or not and not just the reliability aspect of it.
I remember my trans in my 84 Monte Carlo SS started shifting crazy like going from 2 to lockup on the converter and I thought it was about to crap out on me but it turns out it was just a wire that got frayed that controlled the lockup torque convert. Good as new for less than $10.
