Real racing and sim racing are similar and completely different, with sim you don't get to feel the speed or the G's. The only Papy game I played was nascar 2 back in the days lol. Need for Speed and racing games like that are just for fun and don't take seriously. The games that are in the sim category today are really good. I know I won't be able to race in a series in real life but sim racing gives me that opportunity to do that. Set up a championship series and have some fun. Having a wheel setup is well worth the price and yes more rewarding. I do have the wheel setup with the paddle, H pattern, and sequential shifting and can change with just a switch.
Just came back from the drag strip today and nothing beats that adrenaline rush and going down the 1/4 mile at high speeds. That is something sim racing will never achieve. IRacing is fun and a great place to learn how to sim race, but Assetto Corsa and Race Room Experience delivers close to what IRacing has and for way less. If anyone wants to get into sim racing I would recommend those two games before going into IRacing.
