I've climbed in several gas tanks at stations to clean them.
It's dirty down there and a truck pumping gas into those tanks will stir up not only dirt, but water and other nasty stuff like sludge. I do not fill up at a station if I see a tanker truck there. I want at very least for the dirt to settle and the water to rise.
Yes, there is a filter on the pump but most station owners are cheap bastards and do the minimum they need to. As for my car's gas filter- I'd rather not put that to the test if I can help it.
