I think the reason this episode got the cast worked up is the fact that one of them won't have a job this fall, and like you said it seems as though the victim wasn't/isn't decided yet.

Not to mention, if one of them would have slipped about the finale, if they actually do not have a character selected to be killed already, then the own who slips would probably be the one.
