Do you mean hydrogen?
I say do the R&D to get the pieces in place so that the transition could be made as smoothly as possible. The problem is, that R&D costs alot and there is no knowing if it will pay off. And everything needs to come together at the same time. having a network of hydrogen stations is useless if nobody can cheaply produce the gas. And if there is no easily availible fuel, the the automakers aren't going to mass produce the cars. But when there are alternatives to hydrogen that don't require such a massive infrastructure change, then they are much more likely to succeed.
