Chevy Colorado ZR2 Caught in Spy Photos

It appears that Chevrolet is turning the Colorado ZR2 concept that debuted at the 2014 L.A. Auto Show into a production model, based on this prototype spied testing.

Although it’s heavily camouflaged up front, the front bumper covers only a fraction of the front tires, suggesting that a version of the Colorado ZR2 concept’s Prerunner-inspired front end is being tested.

The spy photos also hint that the outer corners of the front bumper camouflage can be easily removable so testers have quick access to the truck’s maximum approach angle. There’s also a possibility that the camouflage is hiding King Off-Road racing shocks, one of the main elements of the concept and a staple among off-road trucks.

The prototype sports a bulging hood scoop along with extra trim tacked onto the wheel arches. The concept had four inches of width added to it, so it’s more than likely the production model will follow in the same footsteps. In addition, the concept sat two inches higher than the standard Colorado and the prototype definitely has improved ground clearance.

It’s worth noting that the prototype’s spare was located underneath the truck like the standard production model. On the concept, the spare tire was mounted in the truck bed, but that was likely for show.

The big question is what powerplant Chevrolet will use. It could be the new 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder diesel or a 3.6-liter gasoline-powered V6.
