When port fuel injection came out, a few years later we had to buy a walnut shell blaster to clean the deposits left on valves. A couple of years ago we dragged out the old blaster, blew off the dust and got a new bag of walnut shells. Direct injection means valve deposits. You can use a good top engine cleaner every couple of years, or wait until it gets pricey. By the way, a good catch can does help.
