You're not wrong. If you're still running (or planning to run) a Haswell K processor and it'll do the job, Skylake just isn't worth the money unless there's a really good reason. My reasoning was split between future compatibility for them as it's thier first build and also Skylake's ability to scale with DDR4 memory speeds and ability to overclock without buying an unlocked processor.
They've been blazing away at Skyrim and Black Ops III all day today and it looks good and framerates are high. Some of the saving grace right now is that they're not doing it in 1080 (1280x768 720p using thier LED TV's as monitors). Reviews and tests look good for the i3 at 1080 but I suspect that in a couple of years games will need a solid four cores instead of hyperthreading and the 380 won't be quite enough but that's plenty of time for them to save and pick up a new CPU, GPU, and PSU to make them like new. In the meantime, I'm going to teach them a little about overclocking and see what the i3-6100 can do at 4.5GHz or so vice the stock 3.7GHz.
