I had various duty times from morning, afternoon, night over that time and never had any trouble sleeping until I go out, then I had a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep.
After about a month it was taking a visable toll on my and an ex-Navy friend asked what was up, I said, me, can't seem to sleep right, he has been on the same kind of ship as me. He said, you need fan noise, try it out, get a fairly loud, big fan and run it full blast, not blowing on me just near me.
I picked one up and damned if I did not sleep like a log, it was that I was so used to the engines, fans, and other noises that I needed it to get to sleep. Over the next few months, I went from high, to medium, low, them off. Worked like a charm!
To this day I sleep like a log no matter how much noise there is, unless it sounds like a 1MC or just the right tone bell style alarm. My wife still can't beleive what I can sleep though.
