Maybe things are different in Mississippi. Around here, the majority of RC planes are kits made of balsa, they're gas powered and they've even got their own airfield. Some of them cost thousands of dollars. I was in the club for a couple of years.
I have seen some of the cheap, hand launched electric ones in the park. Every now and then, someone would bring one to the flying field. I don't know about miles high, but they get up there. They're a long way from being computer controlled drones.
